Viva La Revulushun! - part 13, Gorkanauts

The lumpen silhouettes loomed over the smokey and darkened alleys, and half-ruined half-repaired walls, of Badlanding City as a silent threat to passers-by: The Mek that worked here was serious and skilled. If you want to be on the right end of the firepower on display hire this Mek, not the one across the way! Passing orks looked up in admiration, envy and awe. Grots scuttled by and hoped the giants didn't spot them. Rival Meks cursed them.

+++

These two giants may not see much action in 40k games (it's not impossible but just unlikely) but I hope they will see a lot of in-action, as Mekworld scenery in our planned Grot Revulushun campaign! I like the idea of Big Meks having a Gorkanaut or two sitting around their mekyard, as a work-in-progrees project or even as advertising!

I built both the Bucket-o-Bolts and the Hunk-a-Junk in the summer of 2015. The Bucket was painted in July of that year but the Hunk was never completed. I repainted the Bucket this month to shift it from my old Blood Axe army to my new Freebooterz army. I masked the bits I wanted to keep and resprayed the rest black then zenithal grey. I dry-brushed the grey parts with Ushabti Bone and washed it with Nuln Oil. When that was dry I picked out a few panels with bright reds and yellows using Contrast paints. Then freehanded a nice big skull-and-bones on the front doors. Then to weather it, I selectively washed the entire thing with 10:1 water / Mornfang Brown.

It didn't take me long and it inspired me to complete the Hunk-a-Junk in the same style.

Turnip28: Post-Apocalyptic-Napoleonic Fantasy - part 2

The 33rd Parsnip Old Guard

A horrible  world of rain, mud, starvation, warfare awaits them. And hideous root vegetables.

A world where the technology level is about the same as Europe in 1812, but with more armour and less horses or artillery. And more hideous root vegetables.

Lieutenant Navet joins the regiment as the warband's leader! I've built a second batch, including an officer (who I have given a mask as I like the idea of him wearing a bicorn hat as well as a helmet). There are more chopped-up Poxwalkers for horrible root vegetables and I found some rats in my bits box too...

Machine Cult Pilgrims of Tor Megiddo, part 2

Eight more of the faithful join the procession across the red-orange desert in search of lost gods. I like the idea that some of them are trying to use battered old sensors and scanners to find archeotech relics, while others are just lugging bits of scrap tech they revere as holy relics.

I assembled the Tech-Priest Manipulus with lots of parts removed or left off to give him a more stripped-back and less of a "heavily armed" look. I used a lot of the left-overs for the other pilgrims in this group but there are also parts from Genestealer Cults Neophytes, Freeguild Archers and Militia, Adeptus Mechanicus Skitarii and Rust-Stalkers, Poxwalkers, and probably a few other sources!

Turnip28: Post-Apocalyptic-Napoleonic Fantasy - part 1

The 33rd Parsnip Old Guard

A horrible world of rain, mud, starvation, warfare, and hideous root vegetables. Where the technology level is about the same as Europe in 1812, but with more armour and less horses or artillery.

Turnip28 is a strange and wonderful new sub-genre of the hobby; dark fantasy Napoleonic wargaming with a horrible root vegetable theme. It was created by Max FitzGerald (who can be found on Discord, Instagram, and Patreon) as a way to play Napoleonic games without getting bogged down in historical details, but it was grown into a community project with a life of its own! It seems to be a very loose, but really original, setting with art and miniatures springing up all over the place, and probably table-top rules at some point.

There aren't any rules for the game yet though - and to be honest I might just make some custom Warscrolls and use AoS Skirmish rules, as I'm not sure I want any more detail than that! I want there to be a lot of running about, a bit of ineffective shooting, some melee that is more like pushing and shoving and then a lot of running away. If I use Moonclan Grots Warscrolls as the "elite" troops and strip back the rest from there I think it might be about the right level. Then I just need to come up with a way to add special actions or abilities to vary the games a bit - a small deck of ability cards might do it!

Edit: There are now Turnip28 rules! There is a free PDF on Max's Patreon. It is also beautifully illustrated!

This is some of Max's art for the project, and the thing that really captured my imagination. My drawing (at the top of this post) is my third or fourth attempt at a Napoleonic infantryman with an anachronistic sallet helmet. The first few tries are not worth sharing but I'm pleased with this one.

This is the first WIP batch of the 33rd. They are made from Victrix French Old Guard Chasseurs, with Perry Miniatures mercenary foot knights heads. Plus a Games Workshop Flagellant with a Greatswords head and Victrix arms.

They all have static grass flock and texture paint daubed on their packs and shoulders and a small parts of cut-up Poxwalkers as hideous root vegetables on their bases.

Viva La Revulushun! - part 12, Bigrig the Cybork MegaMek

Bigrig - the Cybork MegaMek

Bigrig is a megalomaniac psychopath - he throws his (considerable) weight around to get his way and there aren’t many in Badlanding who can stand up to him one-on-one. He has also amassed a fairly big following of cyborks who also enforce his orders when needed. Kogwarp hates him and undermines his plans at every opportunity. He was nearly killed by one of his own creations a few years ago; only an entire cybork body, attached to his very pissed-off head, saved him. The painboy who performed the surgery did not survive the procedure. He is more machine than ork now, he has since rebuilt himself a dozen times, each iteration a little bigger than the last.

This model was made for a local hobby challenge to celebrate Warhammer Day (29th June).

With 9th edition Warhammer 40,000 about to drop we chose "9" as the theme and we had to convert and paint something for "Warhammer Eve" (the day before Warhammer Day, obviously!). I struggled for a long time with what to do, I considered something Tzeentch-related for a while, but then Viktor explained his plan and I just followed that!

I’m in mad scientist mood.I’ve all possible parts spread on the operating table, throwing them together and see where I end up.All the while muttering 9-9-9-9.

I came up with something that looked like it might weigh 9 tonnes! He is mostly made from an Ambot with Meganobz / Big Mek bits (leftovers from Saga of the Wolf), Killer Kan glyph-plates and a very cut-down Battle Wagon crew-Ork squeezed into the space where the Ambot's head should be. I decided that a Mek this big should have all the options available to a Mek in Mega-Armour, at the same time! So using all the spares left after building 3 plastic Meganobs he got a kustom mega-blasta, a kustom forcefield generator and a tellyport blasta!

Build-in-progress stage photos, that I couldn't share at the time as we had all agreed to keep our "9" challenge entries secret:
