The Rotmoons and the Starwood Compass, part 1 - Into The Jade Vault

Ghyran; the Naiad Archipelago.

In the humid dark of the Jade Vaults, where a sprawling ancient city fell to ruin hundreds of years ago. Where the trees grow to a thousand feet tall. Where the leafy canopy far overhead is so densely interwoven that barely any light reaches the forest floor...

+++

A volley of heavy crossbow bolts slammed into the green stone ruins sending a shower of stone chips and dust over the orruk pirates hiding within.

"Blessed Gork, that a near one was!" muttered Kapitan daLeeva.

The Kapitan and the Rotmoons didn't want to get pinned down, so he slapped the nearest of the crew on the shoulder and pointed across the street.

Percy Percy sprinted from the cover of the ruins and ducked down behind a stone buttress, on the opposite side of the rumble-strewn street. Seeing this movement a Gutrippa, from the same band of Kruleboyz who were shooting at them, approached the Rotmoons. They assumed the pirates were keeping their heads down and tried to take advantage of it.

But daLeeva stepped out in front of them, casually swept their spear aside with his blade and thrust under their shield.

Dragante, Geedo and Deestro saw their Kapitan attack and moved forward.

The Boltboyz drew a bead on the Kapitan.

The Kapitan twirled his blade as a second Gutrippa ran toward him.

"Alright ladz, he's all yours." he laughed and took a step back, toward the shelter of the ruins.

Something else moved in the green-hued darkness. The Guardians of the Jade Vault had been awakened and slowly gathered to take a stand against the uncouth invaders.

"You talking to me?" The Gutrippa looked slightly confused by the Kapitan's comment.

"No mate. Which he was addressing us." said Bortagno from behind him.

The Kruleboyz hired blade, a hulking Ogor Tyrant, moved to try and outflank the Rotmoons. But he met an unexpected end in the depths of the Vault.

Percy Percy got a shock when he was the first to encounter the Jade Vault's unexpected residents.

The Kruleboyz leader, a Swampcalla Shaman, thought he was out of sight and safe from harm. But El Doctoro had seen him and unleashed a raging flood of green lightning at him. The Swampcalla's defensive charms and trinkets were broken and scattered by the flood of primal arcane energy.

Geedo joined the Kapitan in the ruins.

"What's occurring skipper?" he asked breathlessly.

Percy Percy charged one of the strange skeletal Vault guardians. Nadirite overcame orrukish steel and the pirate orruk cried out. Bold Rikk appeared, drawn to the plight of his shipmate.

Tambor took down the confused Gutrippa and moved ahead of El Doctoro as the shaman unleashed another sorcerous blast.

The Swampcalla tried to flee but the blast caught him in his back and he dropped; a tangled, smoking heap. At this the rest of the Kruleboyz mob panicked: broken, they ran pell-mell into the darkness.

A few days before the Rotmoons had made their way to from Shyish to Ghyran. They travelled via the Persephonyx Skygate after they had, purely by chance, stumbled upon and taken-up a prize: the Havelock a small merchant sky-ship out of Bataar. The merchant had had no guns and it tried to make a run for it downwind. The Rotmoon had given chase and being in prime condition, as she was after the refit she'd just had, was able to easily able to catch-up and board them.

Much to the disappointment of the orruk crew the Havelock had no cargo aboard. But the captain's logbook had detailed records about a trio of paying passengers they had recently transported: Adventurers searching for an artefact called the Starwood Compass, some kind of thaumaturgic device of exceptional quality and accuracy.

Kapitan daLeeva and El Doktoro had cross-referenced the course of the Havelock with the charts she had on board and the maps they had. They concluded (mostly because it just felt likely) that the Starwood Compass should be in an area only marked on one map as the Jade Vaults, in the Naiad Archipelago.

But before the Rotmoons could celebrate, the greater threat became apparent. The Jade Vault was guarded and there was to be no easy victory that day.

The towering giant Mortisan that led the Bonereapers revealed himself. Deestro and Geedo gawped at their first sight of his imposing silhouette.

The pirates had to rapidly change their strategy - even at first glance the Mortisan looked a formidable duellist, but it quickly became apparent he was a powerful sorcerer as well.

He seemed to blur and swept straight through Bold Rikk in the blink of an eye; the orruk had already been injured but the Bonereaper leader's charge defied perception.

Geedo roared and ran between the smaller bone constructs, Mortek Guards who had rapidly advanced to stand at their leader's side.

Bortagno ran up the steps, leapt and slashed double-handed at the Bonereaper lieutenant while he was mid-air - the bone wizard was taken entirely by surprise by this acrobatic assault. He exploded into component parts and became a tumbling rain of bones, before Bortagno landed on the street again.

Geedo scored one or two good hits on the bone giant but fell to a dismissive sweep of his axe. Deestro steeled himself by swearing creatively and got ready to follow Geedo's example.

Bortagno was a little too proud of his spectacular leaping kill and didn't spot the counter-assault that took him down.

Kapitan da Leeva and El Doctoro exchanged a grin. The shaman raised his staff and green arcs sparked around the icon-topped artefact.

The Kapitan was fairly badly injured - he took a moment to catch his breath and looked around, looking for the best location to make a stand.

As the Rotmoons closed their defensive ring around him.

Dragante fell to a combination of Nadirite arrows and blades.

El Doctoro stepped in front of the bone giant as he strode toward the Kapitan, he swung his staff and the Mortisan blocked with his axe unleashing an explosion of green light.

But the giant was not distracted - he was still able to focus enough to release a deadly lance of dark energy at daLeeva! The Kaptain fell and with that the Rotmoons grabbed their wounded mates and fled.

A few days later, aboard the ship and sailing-easy above the Sanctum Isles, east of the Naiad Archipelago.

El Doktoro entered the small cabin, where the Kapitan was recovering and had only just regained consciousness. In the light of the small lantern the big orruk boss looked furious.

"Good morning Alunzo, I come to give a you congratulation, señor, of a prodigious great victory." said the shaman, with a chuckle to himself.

The Kapitan's brow creased as he stared daggers at El Doktoro, assuming the shaman was making sport of him. El Doktoro realised his peril immediately and changed tack.

"Don't aimed your angry at me sir, upon my honour, listen me I am in earnest. We may have lost the battle to that unexpecting flank attack from the Ossiarchs, but we won a thing much greatest in its stead!" After a moment or two of watching the visible confusion he'd caused, he resigned himself to a direct approach.

"How does it look like? We was finded the blasted compass, after you took your knocked on the head."

This was a 3-player game of Warcry, using the Triumph and Treachery battleplan "There can be only one".

Kapitan daLeeva was the only leader who started on the board (the Swampcaller came on in Round 2 and Mir Kainan in Round 3). So he was targeted by everything in Round 1 and had to hide for much of the game using Respite to claw back some health. My Ability Dice were pretty poor for most of the game too.

He rushed forward and smashed into a Gutrippa in Round 1, took some wounds in reply and downed the orruk in Round 2. He fell back to the ruins, while being pelted with fire by two Boltboyz.

El Doktoro took down the Swampcaller (who had already been wounded by Mir Kainan's archer) with a Foot of Gork and two Sorcerous Blasts, while the Ossiarchs occupied the Kruleboyz allied Ogor Tyrant.

After the Kruleboyz and their beefy friend fled, I fed Mir Kainan one Ardboy at a time, chipping away a few wounds in each exchange. They had to be careful not to charge in and attack Bonereapers who had any Actions left, as the bone-boyz were making good use of their Reaction to dish-out very reliable damage.

El Doktoro turned his attention on Mir Kainan, sending several blasts of green lightning at him. But Mir Kainan can throw Sorcerous Blasts too and focused everything at daLeeva, and pretty soon the exchange of wounds went against the Kapitan and the Ossiarchs won the day.

Kapitan daLeeva's Doom Tally = 1

The Ironfang Pirate Fleet: The Rotmoons - Bonesplitterz to Ironjawz, part 3

I've had a box of Weirdbrute Wrekkaz / Brute Ragerz for a few months now and I had struggled with which unit to make them as.

I prefer the masks and lore of Weirdbrute Wrekkaz, but I really don't like their only weapon option (the Chain-smashas).

The Waaagh! energy swirling around the Weirdbrutes causes them to see the world as a sea of green fire. Groups of enemies burn in their vision with particular intensity, so the Weirdbrutes just need to head towards the light and start swinging. The Weirdbrute Masks attached to their faces help to focus their madness into a deadly frenzy. Between the Waaagh! energy coursing through them and the constant pain of the nails, they can ignore the effects of all but the most grievous wounds, meaning most enemies cannot the orruks before they barrel into their lines.

On the other hand, I love the Brute Ragerz weapon options (Mighty Gore-hackas, and Brute Crushas) but I don't like the lore for them at all. Not even a little bit.

It wasn't until after I'd made Ironjawz upgrades of Kapitan daLeeva and El Doktoro that I started to form an idea. After chatting about them on the Animosity Discord solidified the plan, I knew what to do: I'd play them using Ragerz rules and weapons, but I'd give them masks and treat them as Weirdbrutes in my narrative.

Then Viktor said: "Ruffs, skull masks, bulging muscles... a feather or two and we’ll have some very Blanchian pirate orruks..." and I really had no choice! They would have to join the Rotmoons!

So, over the last three evenings, I've built the three of them, then added greenstuff Elizabethan ruffs and finally some choice pieces from my "pirate gear" bits box.

I want to start painting them as soon as possible but it's likely I won't be able to even begin until next week, due to real-world nonsense.

The Ironfang Pirate Fleet: The Rotmoons - Bonesplitterz to Ironjawz, part 2

Kapitan Alunzo da Leeva and The Rotmoons

The Rotmoon itself was a small fast wooden skyvessel with no heavy guns. It had many crudely cobbled-together and jury-rigged repairs to its hull, since the shipwreck in the Harrowmark. Its bottom was covered in barnacles and weeds, its deck was covered in filth and its sides were loaded with baggage. There was always a disticntive line of red-and-yellow triangular “dags” painted along its sides; this was the only part of the ship's appearance that the crew took real pride in.

+++

The Rotmoons may have called themselves Privateers or Pirates, but they spent more of their time acting like explorers than either. They searched the ruins of the Realms for treasures and artefacts from the Age of Myth. Their Shaman, El Doktoro, considered himself an expert on that long-forgotten era and often pronounced, with great complacency and authority, what a found treasure was or its magical powers. He was occasionally correct...

+++

Kapitán Alunzo da Leeva was a dashing and heroic Orruk Pirate; energetic, capable and unusually quick witted. He started his career on the Almagorka Coast in Shyish, where both he and his crew acquired many strange local habits and mannerisms. He wore looted clothes with a preference for black (and lately the red-and-yellow striped trousers the rest of the crew had taken to wearing), black-and-gold enamelled armour, with a “used-to-be-white” ruff-collar, a pair of heavy pistols, and a coat draped over one shoulder as a half-cloak.

He was well liked by his crew as he got them in to, and out of, many scrapes over the years. But he was unpopular with the other ships' captains of the Ironfang Fleet - they saw him as an “upstart young pup”. He was also unfortunately prone to getting shipwrecked much more often than anyone with his skills should have been.

+++

They remained in Shyish for the past several years, but more as a product of unhappy circumstances than by intent or preference.

After the successful conclusion of their last adventure in the Harrowmark, the Rotmoons had everything they needed to prepare for something more ambitious. They had the materials needed to repair and refit the ship. Moreover they had the time and energy needed to complete the work to a much higher standard than had been possible for many years.

They also had the weather-room to work uninterrupted since Kalyustar and his Cursed Company had left the Harrowmark for Thondia. The last news of them came via the Swordfyshes who claimed to have encountered them on the outskirts of the Gnarlwood.

So daLeeva was able to focus his efforts on co-ordinating the crew in dozens of simultaneous projects. The ship was careened, partially dismantled and then rebuilt with timber from the fabled Twisted Oak. Her running rigging was stripped and replaced. Two entirely new suits of sail were made, one carefully folded into lockers below deck. Even her paintwork was refreshed - bright red and yellow triangles lined her gunwales.

The crew worked hard enough to not need "extra motivational measures", but not so hard they became exhausted and fractious. They sang their favourite horrible sea-shanties as they worked and excitedly discussed "what's next?" amongst themselves.

El Doktoro supervised the many minor incantations, cantrips and rituals that all wooden skyvessels (probably) require to stay afloat and interact kindly with the ethertides. The ship had never been so well tuned!

As the major works neared completion daLeeva commanded the ship on a number of running-in cruises. They started cautiously but soon the slow runs, with gentle turns and experimental sail configurations evolved into racing at breakneck speeds over the treetops, sharp and precise turns. Soon the trees sped past beneath them in an exhilarating blur.

+++

During this time the crew also noted changes in their Kapitan and shaman: As is often the case with orruks, they grew larger and stronger because they had been successful. The shaman's arcane abilities became easier to manifest and more spectacular. The Kapitan's armour and other gear was surreptitiously replaced and upgraded with looted gear, that either looked similar or was repainted.

+++

Meanwhile his favourite blade seemed to take it upon itself to step-up in both power and aesthetics as well...

The Shipwrecka

The blade of Kapitan daLeeva's sword appears to be in constant motion; cerulean waves crash, silently breaking on jagged coastal rocks. While its a powerful blade, granting good luck with both wind and tide, it curses the wielder to become ever-more likely to wreck their own ship each time they have success in battle.

Add one to Kapitan daLeeva's Doom for every model he takes down during a battle. Roll a D6 after each game: If the result is less than his Doom (or if his Doom is more than 6!) then the Rotmoon will be shipwrecked... again!

Once the ship is wrecked, add one to the crew's Treasure total for each Objective or Treasure Token the Rotmoons control at the end of each battle. When the Treasure total reaches 6 they have enough magical loot to get the ship airborne again. Swap back to tracking Kapitan daLeeva's Doom!

The Ironfang Pirate Fleet: The Rotmoons - Bonesplitterz to Ironjawz, part 1

As my orruk pirate crews are going to have to shift rules again - this time from Bonesplitterz to Ironjawz - they are going to need a couple of changes. The main change is new leaders, as some of the models I have will not work as Ironjawz.

The Rotmoons and the Ogresuns will each need a new boss and a new shaman. The Cleavermaws are okay as Kaptain Mogrum was built as a Weirdnob Shaman (it was only later I started using Bonesplitterz Wurrgog Prophet rules for him. Both are on 40mm bases anyway).

The Rotmoons are the first crew on deck.

Kapitan Alunzo daLeeva was a Savage Big Boss, he'll be an Ardboy Big Boss in AoS and a Brute Boss in Warcry (at least until they add rules for the Ardboy Big Boss and the other new Ironjawz models!).

El Doktoro was a Wardokk, or sometimes a Morboy Bone Totem Bearer in Warcry. He will become a Weirdnob Shaman.

+++

The first-stage build for Weirdnob Shaman El Doktoro - as I did with Old Mudgob, I've converted a barefoot Brute model. I like the way it makes a shaman feel a little bit more "wild". I'm also very pleased with the staff - I think it links to the crew's name and theme quite nicely.

The greenstuff work: gap-filling and adding the rest of his coat, an Elizabethan ruff/collar, and a pair of crude "sunglasses" made from chunks of broken glass.

+++

Ardboy Big Boss Kapitan Alunzo daLeeva mid-build (I'm was searching for the right bits...)

He also gets an Elizabethan ruffe, a goatee beard, a pair of pistols, I still want to add some kind of fancy coat (worn as a half-cape) and a bit of jewellery.

(Their bases are made from cut-up bits of scafolding from the Thondian Strongpoint / Domicile Shell kit. I got a couple of the sprues from Stormbringer magazine recently.)

Painting next...

The Ironfang Pirate Fleet - The Plunderblades and the Portwreckas, part 9

I'm working on two (more) pirate orruk brutes for the Plunderblades.

+++

Rogg

The skull and bones hatpin is from the Gore-gruntas kit (I don't actually own any of the pig riders, but there are enough really nice components in the kit to mean I have ordered loads of odds and ends from it, from bits-resellers, over the last few years).

The belly-armour / loincloth is from the (newish) Weirdbrute kit. The holstered flintlock pistols are from my tiny, and diminishing, stock of the now out-of-production Empire Pistoleers. One of the (few) things I am looking forward to from ToW!

+++

Dram

The skull and bones hatpin is from the same source as Rogg's.

The sea-coat is made from chopped-up Hexwraith barding and greenstuff. It's making me wish I'd put coats on more of my Brutes!

Both these ladz are undercoated now and waiting for paint.
